The idea for Security Online was born when Bill accepted a job as Vice President of Sales and Marketing of an access control company located in Sunnyvale, California, the heart of the silicon valley. At the time, the only talk in the valley was about this thing called the internet. Bill started exploring the internet in 1994 for security information and found it scarce and difficult to find. These were the days before search engines. He then got the idea that what the electronic security industry needed was a place on the internet that could serve as an information hub for the entire industry. Bill created the first Security Online web site and launched it in 1995.

Security Online, a privately held company, has evolved into a virtual company with its headquarters in San Francisco, the software development team based in the South of France and the sales team based throughout the greater metropolitan areas in the United States. This approach is utilized to keep the operating expenses and overhead to a minimum while building a strong customer base. As Bill would say, "we use the latest web based technologies but we built the company the old fashioned way, one customer at a time".
